We purchased two different but similar arm trays and preferred the other. This has a slot for a cel phone but it was way too narrow for us - you could put a phone without a case in it. The other had no phone slot but a larger surface that could easily accommodate a cup and phone laying on it. The black surface didn't create any friction the diminish a cup or anything else from being nudged off. The other one had a much more effective brushed velvet surface. The edges of the bamboo on both is a bit rough. We put cloth under it to eliminate the potential for the rough edges to mar the leather of the couch. We wish we had purchased two of the others but not enough to return this one.
