I did trial grooves with the tool that came in the box. This worked well and the skin went through the center hole without clogging. I like the tool despite the fact that it's budget. I went further and used an Indian stone to sharpen a metal cutter in the same way a very expensive tool is polished. Since the tool was already performing extremely well, the additional honing was only done to keep the cutter sharper for longer. I don't know if this helps keep the blade sharp but so far the tool works well and the cutter looks really nice and is easy to sharpen later if needed.
