We're not running we started walking and I was looking for something that could hold a phone, ID cards and a rescue inhaler for the basics. This is a very well built backpack and I was very impressed with the padding. The photos show my 6 inch phone to give an idea of the size. The inhaler doesn't actually fit in the main compartment, but it's usually in a person's pocket. I liked the outer mini pocket and the inhaler can be placed there if desired. The buckle was a surprise. I'm used to a thicker, stronger buckle, but this one is very thin and wide. The real issue for me was the length of the strap. I can put it on, but it's tight and I don't feel comfortable wearing it for a long time. It's great for both husband and son, so the sharing plan will still work. If you're a tall person, this probably won't fit well around your waist. I'm not trying it as a "sling" style as I'm not a fan of sling items in general. Even if I were a fan, the straps wouldn't stretch enough to be comfortable for me. Overall, I would still recommend this pack to most people.
