Side compartments are good, but not for pens and pencils. The spikes go through the mesh and the area isn't deep enough to really hold them up. If you don't mind, they fall. I think you will be fine. The top is not as durable as I would like. My monitor tends to shake a bit. It doesn't look like it's going to fall, it's just not as grounded/stable as it would be on a flat table top. This appears to be due to the top "shelf" being held up with just a couple of metal bars and therefore not having a completely flat base. And it's too high, so I have to look up a bit to see the screen. But maybe I'm just picky. It's a good device, but it just doesn't quite meet my needs or expectations.
