Review on πŸ“ Fowler Micrometer 52-253-102-1: Accurate Measurement with Precise Measuring Graduation by Ron Turner

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Not the highest quality but fairly well made

Received this as a replacement for a stolen Starrett and decided to give it a try. They are really well made and work well. Mine required a small calibration adjustment at a half thousand out of the box, but it's easy enough to do. The standard supplied is accurate and lapped - a perfect match for Starrett and another unknown brand I have. case is good too. The faces are nicely aligned and, as far as I can tell, parallel. The thimble on mine tends to rotate very easily and has no play, but there are times when it has a bit of resistance - it doesn't seem to repeat itself in the same place, but it does happen often and it affects accuracy Not. just annoying. I will disassemble it to see if it can be repaired. The ratchet is very light and sometimes snaps when spinning the thimble quickly or when hitting that impact resistance. Maybe there's a way to make it stiffer to better suit Starrett and B&S. Visually I have to adjust a bit to read the scale quickly as the top halves and bottom quarters are separated by a gap between them - sort of I prefer the Starrett there. By the way, the ratchet cap and locking lever are made of metal. In any case, while there's a small "Fowler Tax" on the price of these China imports, it's very well made and worth the buy - not exactly the same, but very close to higher end mics I think i can trust him I don't actually use this 2 inch size very often, so I expect it will last a very long time. I guess there are still low quality imported mics out there but compared to the first mics that appeared in the 90's they are totally different and the quality is here in this one. Edit: Took it apart and didn't see any debris or chatter, the threads are super clean. spring and it has improved its feel so that it now looks very much like a Starrett.
