I used to use a small sponge filter on the inlet to keep the filter media from getting too dirty, but it often clogged and needed regular cleaning. So far this product seems to be a great replacement and is much easier to clean. BTW I use Aquaclear 50 and it barely fits on the inlet which I think is perfect.
