The micrometer runs very quietly and is extremely precise. Dimensions are in inches with a decimal point, although the instructions state dimensions in millimeters (mm). If you want to express the value in millimeters or fractions of an inch (e.g. 1/8 inch), you need to calculate it. I would give 5 stars if the instructions for use were clearer. The numbers on the shaft (0, 1, 2, 9) represent tenths of an inch. So an adjustment from 0 on the thimble to exactly 3 on the shaft would be 0.3 inches. One full turn of the thimble = 0.025 inch. So if you start at 0 on the thimble with 3 on the shaft and make the thimble one full turn (back to 0) the size is .325 inches. The second full turn gives a measurement of 0.350 inch. You can read inches to the fourth decimal place (e.g. -- 0.3255) by lining up the lines on the shank with the lines on the thimble. The device comes with a case. I love it and I recommend it.
