Soft, Blendable, Good Value

Review for PrimoSoft 72 colored pencils. Soft pencils with good color coverage and blendable (before you ask, these are not Prismacolor Premiere level but higher than a lot of middle of the line colored pencils). These are round lacquered natural wood pencils - there are no colors painted on them, but they do have color names printed on them (see my note about that below). The pencils have a surprisingly thick core for their slim width. This means there is not a lot of protection for the core if they are dropped so be careful! I have done minor sharpening (sharpen easily) and not found any breakage in the cores yet. See attached picture for swatch chart (the color chart on the back of the tin is not that useful since the tin is a dark blue-gray) and three blending squares. Look it over to see if these are the colors you would be interested in. For example, if you are interested in grays, there are only three (four if you add in the Metallic Silver). But, if you are interested in pinks, there a lot for a 72 set!The pencils come snugly set in their trays (no rattling around or broken points) in a very nice tin box. It would make a great gift for someone starting out or using coloring books. I would not call them "artists" or "professional" pencils because there is no light fastness information.I would give them a 5 star rating except some of the colors are really, really close to being duplicates (they may even be duplicates). Note from picture Blue, Royal Blue, Sky Blue. Also the some of the names are not that descriptive. For example Sky Blue is a lot darker than Deep Sky Blue. There are a lot of blues, but I think they could have done a better job in picking hues / shades that are not so close together. Finally, for some reason they covered up with a sticker the "ACMI" "AP" stamp on the back.I hope this information and picture helps.

Pros
  • The pencils produce sharp clean lines, great for outlining and detailed work
Cons
  • The color may not spread evenly when using a brush for blending
