Great for the money but features aren't complete yet

I've been researching 3D scanners for a few months and it seems like they generally fall into two categories: 1) Stationary scanner and requires one Turntable 2) Portable scanner that costs a fortune. I just had to try. A major benefit was the mobile app, which allowed me to take the scanner with me and scan art or objects of interest on site without my computer. Wonderful! Well, my actual experience with the scanner dampened my enthusiasm a bit. Some of them live up to expectations, others (especially the mobile app) don't. Here are my first impressions: The scanner works great. Using it in an artificially lit area on the included turntable or as a (handheld) face scanner I was able to get amazing scans when connected to my laptop. A scan of the gnome in the attached images amounted to about 5000 capture frames. The program took a long time to stitch the point cloud together (I thought it froze for a while but it ended), but the result was actually pretty good. The facial scan here was maybe 1000 frames. I mention "frames" because each capture frame takes up some memory while the application iterates over and captures your object. This was never a problem on my laptop, but could occur when scanning a really huge object. Now the mobile application is a whole different story. I connected the scanner to my LG V30 with the cable that came with it and it was able to scan for maybe a second before the whole phone died. The phone restarted and restarted over and over again until I turned off the scanner. I think the power consumption exceeded the phone's rating. Then I tried the Samsung Galaxy S9. This phone did not detect the scanner even though it was connected to the network. Finally, I tried the Galaxy S8 which, despite being an old phone, worked perfectly. Depending on your phone or your access to other devices, this might not even work for you. There's supposed to be a Wi-Fi option, but I haven't tried it without instructions on how to set it up. The mobile application works, but unfortunately does not store data on an external card. Therefore, you are stuck with the number of images your device can store in the onboard memory. On my Galaxy S8 it was around 50 frames, which is nowhere near the amount it takes to scan any of the images I've attached here. So while the application works, it's practically useless until the developers improve it significantly. Since the portability of the mobile app was one of the main reasons I bought this scanner, I decided to return it based on that fact alone. But in the end, the features that work well with the desktop app are still worth it. Price, and maybe one day the developers will weed out the mobile app. It's still better than anything else in its price range, it just means I need to carry my laptop and not my mobile device. Scan quality is good, although not perfect. It tends to round out sharp details, so expect some loss of detail when scanning. On my scan of the gnome, for example, there are hardly any holes or a buckle on a belt. They were much clearer in the original. You should also be aware that it cannot scan anything black. As a result, the gnome's eyes, which were mostly black, lost all detail. This can be enhanced by coating the object with something white, be it spray paint, baby powder or maybe cornstarch. So all this means I will not be returning the product. However, I hope that the developers offer firmware updates and app updates to solve problems, especially with mobile functions. Until they do, it would be difficult to recommend this item to anyone.

  • Durable finish
Cons
  • There are downsides
