Review on 19 Slot Bamboo Knife Storage Block by Cook N Home by Sara Houck

There seems to be a question about the design of this block: is it solid bamboo or is it veneer? The answer is "both". Bamboo, a hollow, cylindrical plant with long longitudinal fibers, will not grow to the 6" x 6" cross-section needed to build this block. Instead, pieces of bamboo are glued and pressed together into a block. Then the top layer of the block is covered with thick pieces of milled bamboo to create an even and attractive pattern. I also took some shots of my longest knife and sharpener, checking the deepest grooves in the block. My sharpening steel is a Wüsthof 10". You can see in the photo that it is about 1mm in its groove. A little more and it will stick out from behind. I also placed a Wüsthof Ikon 9" bread knife. into the deepest knife slot (except for the cleaver slot) and it fits perfectly. But I wouldn't recommend going longer than 9 inches; even 1 inch longer and I think the knife will stick out. .
