A device that automatically scores a ping-pong game? Wow, this brings up a lot of questions.Does it work?-Amazingly yes with about 95-99% accuracy. It feels like magic because it's hard to believe a device can actually keep track of ping pong ball bounces.-No problems with balls that hit the white line or even nick the table.-The unit is able to recognize the end of each point almost immediately after it happens. No tedious delays between points.-It handles let serves perfectly well. What will confuse it?-Inadvertent ball bounces will cause scoring errors. This means no more throwing the ball back to your opponent by bouncing it off the table.-If you have 15 foot ceilings and hit the ball very high, it will mistakenly think you missed the table before the ball lands. How do you manually fix the score?-There is a button pad that you adhere to the side of the table which allows one person to adjust the score as necessary. How is it installed?-Installation is fairly easy. It will require you to drill 2 small holes on the underside of each side of the table. The hardest part is hiding the wires which is optional. How good is the net?-Very good for casual play. It is easy to install and pulls taut using an elastic band on one side and velcro on the other.-You must use the included net so it can record net vibrations. Can it score the updated 11 point game?-Yes. You have the option of the 11 point game (alternate serve every 2 points) or the legacy 21 point game.-Serve changes are announced and the server's score will blink. This makes it easy to keep track of whose serve it is.Is it beer pong compatible?-Not sure but I suspect the beer will block the ball vibrations. After a few rounds, you probably won't care if the score is correct anyway. What are the negatives?-The whole contraption looks like a cheap novelty gadget from the flimsy plastic construction to the low-tech led scoring numbers.-Sound quality is poor in terms of speaker quality and voice quality. It sounds like an 80's arcade game.-The control pad looks and feels cheap with very difficult to read labels. You probably want to attach your own labels so you can easily tell what each button does.CONCLUSIONWhile looking and feeling a bit like a gimmicky novelty item, the functionality is actually excellent. The technology involved is borderline magic. I give it 5 stars for functionality and 3 stars for aesthetics and sound. Not having to remember the score and announce it before every point can really make casual games more enjoyable. There is a small learning curve to the device but once you get the hang of it, everything goes pretty smoothly. The sound quality and effects are befitting of a casual, informal, party atmosphere. It's not for intense play or tournaments.
