07/08/2021: Regarding today's test and the current firmware (20210624) my opinion on HDHomeRun PRIME. I currently have an HDHomeRun CONNECT 4K (and formerly EXTEND) so I have a lot of experience with the HDHomeRun series. I give it 4/5 stars for the overall hardware and software experience that HDHomeRun offers to the end user. Pros: It works as expected when combined with a setup adapter (provided by your cable company) and an M-CARD PRIME. which should be able to watch cable TV (encrypted and DRM) on any device in your house with the native HDHomeRun app. While many other apps like the Android TV Live Channels app and Plex perform just as well, if not better, thanks to a better user interface and program guide. Cons: Software and DRM (as expected). The HDHomeRun app on any device (iOS, Android TV, PC) is not compatible with other alternatives like Android Live Channels, Plex, etc. The HDHomeRun app's navigation and channel guide are minimal and it's not easy to navigate through the different channels. DRM does not allow you to record TV shows using Plex or any other application. The thought of owning hardware like the HDHomeRun PRIME box for DVR is non-existent, forcing you to go back to your TV provider and rent a physical box for DVR capabilities. Yes, you can record some DRM-free channels that your cable company hasn't blocked yet, mostly local channels, but all "premium" channels like Disney, HGTV, Discovery, etc. all have DRM. HDHomeRun has long promised DRM DVR functionality, but has yet to be released (or has never been released).TLDR; great hardware, but software is annoying (read "Cons").
