I was happy to hear that LEGO would be releasing an affordable Luke X-wing set. The X-Wings from the Sequel trilogy were overpriced for my liking, but this set lets you take on the Empire on a budget. Design: LEGO uses many details to create an optimized version of the Rebel X-Wing. The fenders could have been a bit stronger, but that would have required more parts, resulting in a higher price. My only real complaint is that LEGO advertises "retractable landing gear" and it is absolutely non-retractable. It would be easy to turn it on, but it doesn't bother. Assembly: Assembly was fun and didn't take too long. 500 pieces is the perfect middle ground for those who want to fully immerse themselves in assembly but can't commit more than 5 hours to it. This is a great set for a parent/guardian and child to build together. There are some really simple things I went through, but the mechanism that allows the fighter to switch from cruise to attack mode (where the wings form an "X") was a beast and required real concentration . There were a few stickers, which is to be expected, but not enough to disrupt the process. It took me about 1 hour and 45 minutes to complete the set from unboxing to hooking it up. Playability: The Starfighter is relatively smooth and easy to hold. Switching from cruise mode to attack mode is very easy and can be done with one finger while "tossing" the set around. The Rebel Fighter features two spring-loaded shooters ready to destroy any LEGO TIE Fighter that appears. The kit includes an additional red projectile. As always, there's room for R2-D2. Aside from the feather arrows and the "X" wing shape, there's nothing else in this set. But it shouldn't be. This is Luke's X-wing, and if you're a fan of the original trilogy, he'll be pushing all the right buttons. Display: The set looks great on my shelf. The only downside is that the fighter can't be shown in its charge/"X" formation without the help of some extra parts, but that goes for cannons as the X-wing can do that as far as I know. don't land in an attack. Position.Minifigures: We get three minifigures and our trusty R2-D2 droid. Luke, Leia, and the set-exclusive General Dodonna look good, although R2's headprint was a little off, but it's not noticeable unless you look very closely. Luke comes armed with a blue lightsaber with a shiny silver hilt, while Leia and the General both carry blasters. Cost: The average price per piece of this set is 10.5 cents, which is very good for a licensed set. There are no site builds or "bonus" materials here, but what we get is very good. This is Luke's $50 X-wing that fans have been asking for. Having ordered the set, built it and flown it from the living room to the bedroom, I can say that this is almost the perfect set for the LEGO enthusiast who wants a fun, enjoyable building experience without wasting a second. Mortgage. worth $50. Final Thoughts: This is Luke's X-wing. If you know, you know. Great value set, very fun and interesting build and decent (including an exclusive) minifigure. If you want more, the Force may not be with you as strongly as you thought.
