I wouldn't use them on clay except for smoothing soft clay. They're too soft to withstand such sustained pressure and you'll probably ruin them sooner than you'd like! If you're looking at them because you want to use them for drawing or painting, they're great! These are the softest color formers I have and they are very good for the price and what you get. The rubber feels very smooth and flexible, the quality probably won't allow it to last as long as the more expensive brands so I would suggest being a bit gentler looking at the top which worries me will solve.
