Anyone who is hard of hearing and hopes that this telephone with subtitles will enable normal phoning again will be bitterly disappointed. There is a significant delay between the interlocutor's speech and the display of subtitles on the phone screen. This latency isn't significantly reduced by a high-speed internet connection, and that's not surprising: the repeater operator is involved in subtitle recruitment, and this just can't be fast enough to be satisfactory. Anyone reading this has seen how unsatisfactory real-time TV subtitles are, for example on news shows: it's BETTER than the CapTel experience. On the other hand, pre-produced programs like Nova have excellent subtitles, but that's the result of massive production work: It's the furthest from the evening news and a CapTel show in the world. Despite all this negativity, I keep my phone in the hope that in an emergency I can get my message across and let the authorities know I'm on the line with a significant delay. I have to say though that I've had terribly embarrassing situations in public places trying to explain that I have a hearing problem. For some reason most people just don't get it. I'm afraid that we who are hard of hearing are somehow incomprehensible to most people.
