Review on ASUS VG259QM 24.5" 1920X1080 DisplayPort HDR Gaming Monitor, 280Hz, Flicker-Free, Pivot, Tilt, Height Adjustments by Matt Williamson

Good, but with many annoying problems

In general, considering the price, the monitor is quite good. Response times for IPS are decent and input lag at 240/280 Hz is low. But there are a few annoying things: 1. Input lag at 60Hz is ridiculous. Rtings measured 35ms at 60Hz, meaning this monitor is unusable at 60Hz and more than three times that of most gaming monitors (10ms or less). Obviously no one buys gaming monitors to use at 60Hz, but I would like at least 60Hz to be usable as that is the default display mode on every single operating system, including a UEFI.2 motherboard. There are many bugs in the firmware. First, after turning on the computer and in Windows, the monitor goes blank for a few seconds (occurs about 1-5 minutes after Windows starts). I've encountered this on both Radeon and Nvidia cards. the monitor is to blame. Another bug is that the monitor sometimes defaults to 144Hz after restarting the graphics driver or (rarely) even when pressing the Alt key. Turning off the display with the power button will completely reset the Windows position and desktop configuration, sometimes enough that you have to change the display position and set it as the default display in Windows after you turn it back on.3. FreeSync's default range is only 48 to 240 Hz, but you can use the Custom Resolution Utility (CRU) to increase the range limit from 240 to 280 Hz. I have verified via the OSD that the refresh rate changes dynamically above 240Hz after the range limit is increased.4. The display takes a long time to wake up or turn on. Sometimes when I restart my PC, the monitor doesn't show the UEFI splash screen because it takes a long time to wake up. I had the same problem with my XG258; All those high refresh rate monitors (the ones from ASUS at least) take way too long to connect. Switching the OSD to 280Hz is stupid because it creates unnecessary complexity. There's nothing stopping you from simply creating a 280Hz mode from the graphics panel and using that instead. So why even create a hack job that requires the display to be reset to toggle, instead of just converting it to a regular EDID?

Pros
  • The brightness is strong, I like it for gaming
Cons
  • Poor connection: If the monitor is not properly connected to the computer, the image may not appear or may be distorted.
