So I just upgraded my ASUS VG248QE to VG258QM with a 0.5Hz TN panel. I thought the hardware unboxing (I think) noticed that the IPS panel didn't quite handle inserting black borders (ELMB), which is an improved feature that I used on my VG248QE. In case you didn't know, previous 144Hz monitors in 2013 had an additional 120Hz mode that was primarily used for 3D glasses. do you remember them Yes. So if you hack it, you might have this thing called "Light Booster" that gamers thought worked to reduce motion blur. After this hack came out and Nvidia 3D Vision died, monitors used improved versions of this technology and dubbed it "Black Border Insertion". That's why I bought ELMB. So the reason I upgraded my old monitor is twofold. First, I have mild autism with various comorbidities, so am very sensitive to update rates. I can easily tell the difference between 144Hz, 240Hz and 280Hz. My brain is very different from the brains of allists (not autistic), so of course YMMV. The second reason was that if you wanted low motion blur, there was a hard metata: use light gain, set the gain to 10%, which ruins the colors. and makes it dark. I was bored. I couldn't be creative with how I set it up. Use normal 144Hz or use Lightboost. That's all. VG258QM solves this problem for me. There are many ways to use it and some secret ones that you can only learn about on the Blur Busters forums in the "official vg259qm owners thread" which although designed for a related monitor has settings , which also work on this monitor . . Now I will list several ways of using this board, all of which can be mixed and matched to some extent: 1. Use Gsync2. Use ELMB Sync with gsync or just ELMB3. Overclock your monitor4, use 8-bit HDR5. Use hidden exclusive 240Hz 10-bit HDR (with FRC dithering, so not "real" 10-bit) with a special hack on the Bloodbuster forums with the Custom Resolution Utility for more comfortable HDR in games6. Use top secret developer menu (Blurbuster forums) to enable hidden Variable Overdrive (OD) setting with optimized output, but menu text keeps crashing until you reset it7. Use shadow enhancement to see in the dark corners of the game. Now there are a few caveats. HDR isn't the best, so only use it as a special treat. This is not the main feature of this monitor. Colors are great in sRGB (95% on color reproduction), but HDR colors are average (only 45%). Another thing, if you want to use ELMB, make sure you use it on a TN panel because the VG259QM doubles the IPS panel. Frames and cannot fully support 280Hz despite similar firmware as VG258QM. ELMB is also a bit boring, but you get used to it. at least i did. The monitor also doesn't allow HDR and ELMB at the same time, and also blocks brightness control (yes, it uses the backlight for that primarily) and ASCR. Also, the screen goes black for a few seconds when an HDR game or an AutoHDR game (Windows 11) is activated. And for a TN panel, color accuracy and viewing angles are okay, but they're a lot better than the vg248qe and come out of the box great. I use racing profile rings, 100r, 91g, 93b and the best thing about the monitor is the motion clarity. Visuals are blurry even on 360Hz panels, but even without the ELMB, the Testufo page looks very sharp. Overall, I highly recommend this monitor, especially for neuro-intermediate gamers who prefer to tinker and not hang on to anything for long. last thing. I will share with you the secret formula. GSYNC + VSYNC (forced in GPU control panel) + 3 frames below your monitor's refresh rate (277 or 237) + ELMB (optional).
