Not velvety, but velvety soft! The warmth and quality of the materials are very good and the fit feels great - at least when baby is standing upright and still. When a child decides to do what they do best, being active, you can tell they aren't sitting very well. For a 7 year old girl, I first bought her normal size range - the equivalent of a US size 7 according to the size chart. My granddaughter had trouble getting into them. Unlike most leggings, these don't stretch! I sent them back with no problems and as they seemed a bit small I ordered the next size up thinking they would fit. No, the plus size (marked 140) is long enough to fit around her legs but still barely covers her butt! Again, the fabric does NOT stretch. My granddaughter is very active and has an athletic build. Although she has to wear them all the time, she loves them; and as long as she's wearing a top long enough to cover some parts of her back when she bends over and squats, I'll let her wear it. If bought for a very thin child, they may fit. However, if the child is athletic or, um, "chubby," they most likely will NOT fit properly. Again, there is LITTLE room for "seating" here, otherwise it would be great.
