Great product! It seems like a simple idea, but the effect on the hot dog's flavor and texture is way better than I imagined. The edges of the cuts in the shell are beautifully browned. When grilling dogs, it's easier to get a nice caramelized flavor without overcooking portions. An unexpected benefit is that the bun has a better grip on the dog. This is especially good for toddlers because it prevents the dog from slipping out of the bun just as easily. Our four year old complained more about the "brown coating" on the outside of his hot dog than anyone else in the family, including his little brother. like brown dogs, which is why we liked them better than dogs without slits. We also liked that the condiments dripped into the hot dog's slots. This works best if you first apply pressure to one end of the dog and then pump the pressure a little to the other end. This is especially important when dealing with large dogs like 1/4 pound Jewish National Dogs. If you apply too much pressure, the dogs will tear at the side instead of cutting themselves. So with large dogs, make sure you focus the pressure on one area at a time until the entire carapace is severed. The slot dog is larger than expected so my husband originally bought two sizes of hot dogs in case 1/4 pound would work better. As it turned out, both sizes worked well. I look forward to offering slot machines as a fun option when we're making hot dogs for the group!
