Most modern sewing machines work well with built in one pass buttonholes as long as the fabric is sufficiently layered, stiff and lies perfectly flat. Cuffs and button placket at the front are really no problem. But imperfections like collar stripes and collars often get stuck in the middle of a cycle, even if you work slowly and try to guide the fabric. This stabilizing plate helps stabilize uneven fabric on lower end Janome machines that do not come with this plate (high end machines have a more complex setup and contain a similar plate). Janome machines move the rapier head and stabilizer plate as a unit, with the fabric pinched between them. If you've ever had to pick out a hinge that went wrong, then you know this accessory is worth the investment. I enjoy using my Janome NQM 25th Anniversary Edition machine and this tool greatly improves the functionality. Highly recommended!
