I've had some problems recently with a new receiver (Marantz SR5006) which I suspect are caused by intermittent shorts in speaker wire could. Access to the rear of the receiver is difficult, so I preferred to solve the problem in one session, using banana plugs on each wire, eliminating the possibility of a short. For comparison, I mixed GLS "Generation 4" Gold Plugs with these simpler plugs. GLS candles with delivery are three times more expensive. Will they be three times better? All connections work and the receiver works as it should. GLS plugs are in fact better designed than generic ones - they have a non-conductive barrel to reduce the chance of a short circuit when there are other bare wires nearby. They work with a very wide range of wire sizes and are very easy to use. These bottom end connectors don't have a non-conductive jacket, they don't work as well with larger wires, and it wasn't as easy to reconnect the two pieces after the wire was threaded. For larger wires, they offer a second attachment method through a hole in the side, but are much more open. If you have the time to carefully install them, and assuming you want to save a few bucks, these universal plugs will do the trick. If you're willing to pay for convenience, the others are good choices too.
