I didn't want the strut to fall apart with the wing nuts so I used other bolts with nylon locknuts. The strut prevents the handle from loosening and bending to one side or the other. I suggest not over tightening the broom handle on the brush as my plastic end of the broom handle broke and I had to replace it after years of loosening. It's a mistake to just tighten the handle because every bend breaks it more easily, especially snow on the sidewalk in winter when it broke. Many repair end fittings are NOT the same as broomsticks and are for paint roller or sander extensions that appear to use a different thread pitch.
