Density and Firmness Answers

I just received my 3" Queen size topper. I am writing this review now (before I've slept on it!) to provide some answers that I could not find on other reviews. The Queen came in a box that weighed 26.2lbs (not 28.2lbs as noted). The box and packaging were 2.0 lbs, so the topper itself is 24.2lbs. The mattress topper is 79" x 59" (not 80" x 60" as noted, but that is still fine). The topper with the thin cloth cover is pretty much a true 3" deep. With those dimensions, you get 8.09 cu ft. So, 24.2lbs divided by 8.09cu ft is 2.99 lbs/cu ft. The density is 3.0 lbs/cu ft. By the way 40D is a durometer measurement (hardness scale, Shore D), and not a density. Using hardness scales may not be the best indicator of your topper performance, for lots of technical reasons and marketing reasons (foams vs solids). I chose to evaluate my mattress topper purchase, largely on density. With regard to firmness, I would rate this a fairly firm for a foam topper. I weigh 230lbs, and laying on my back, I am fully supported, and only my butt and shoulder blades drop in fairly deep. Laying on my front side, I am fairly evenly supported across my entire body. Legs and arms sit on top, and don't sink. That said, I don't think I will be sleeping in a crater, like soft foam mattresses, and therefore, I don't think it will be a "hot" mattress, as my body will not be sunk down inside and surrounded by foam. If anything changes after actual use, I will update.

Pros
  • Its full size ensures compatibility with many different mattress sizes
Cons
  • The topper may be too thick for some users
