Having worked on a computer for most of my adult life, I think I just haven't been paying enough attention to RAM. I swapped out a few sticks that were 100% tested but just didn't work properly. Have used the Crucial brand and immediately noticed a significant increase in performance. Thinking it might be a coincidence, I swapped out the RAM on another computer as well and noticed a performance boost on that one too. The old and new Crucial DIMMs had EXACTLY the same specs so the improvement was not due to an upgrade, I just believe Micron/Crucial makes a superior product.
