I bought this spice bar for family picnics and am very happy with it. It seems very well made and durable considering the price. All containers are firmly inserted, there is room at the bottom for a layer of ice, tongs work well. The packaging says hand wash only. I suspect the main problem with machine washing is that hot water can melt acrylic. I am very lazy and would rather die than wash my hands. I was able to wash it in the dishwasher in the following ways: a) carefully remove the lid with a screwdriver to release the loop; b) placing on the top shelf with nothing in the dishwasher; then c) washing with cold water; and d) reattaching the lid by snapping the hinge again. As long as you are very careful with the hinge I see no reason not to wash it this way. YMMV but it worked for me and I will keep doing it. A+ product, I would definitely recommend.
