Review on StarTech.com Dual Monitor KVM Docking Station - for Two Laptops - 4K - File Transfer - Universal USB Laptop Dock (USB3DDOCKFT) by Charles Alfian

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Some issues but overall very helpful (albeit with a caveat for Mac users)

First, if you're a Mac user running macOS 10.13.4 (and you probably are, if you're disciplined are). Updating your OS) Heed the warnings in other reviews and avoid this dock for now. Displays are not properly mirrored or extended due to an issue with the DisplayLink driver (I found the hard way and had to use the Apple Time Machine feature to revert to 10.13.3). If you need information on when this will be fixed you can visit the DisplayLink website. However, there is currently no ETA. As far as I know, this isn't a StarTech issue, it's DisplayLink third-party software that they use to control their display technology. For this reason I'm not deducting a single star for this edition, although I may be being too generous. Note to StarTech: DisplayLink has had plenty of time to prepare and fix this issue; If possible, find another partner. [FYI, this is my 3rd dock with 3 different brands and they all use DisplayLink. So be careful with any docking stations you look at.] Other than the above issue, I am very happy with my purchase. I bought a docking station that works as a KVM switch for two laptops. I have a MacBook Pro and a PC running Windows 7. I've never had any problems with my keyboard, mouse or other peripherals - switching between laptops is seamless. Sometimes there are some annoying problems with monitors, but mostly when switching from Windows to Mac. Prime example: Mac screens don't appear until I press the keyboard while broadcasting. Even then, sometimes, though rarely, I had to go back to Windows and then back to the Mac to get the Mac to show up on my monitors. Also, when switching between laptops (both ways), all open windows are often rearranged to where I last left them. Sometimes it doesn't, but I've never found a way to avoid it when it does. Admittedly, I'm not sure if the above issues are related to StarTech, DisplayLink, or the operating systems themselves. For the purposes of my review, I blame StarTech because it's their product. I still give the dock four stars because it's a fairly unique device that addresses a real performance issue for me - the ability to switch between my personal laptop and work laptop with relative ease. Overall it works very well - any problems are outweighed by the benefits in my opinion. However, due to the issues mentioned above, it could be a bit more user-friendly. But I know not much is changing for Mac users on 10.13.4 at the moment. Hopefully, DisplayLink will fix their problems very soon. StarTech is also on the hook and if that doesn't get fixed in the near future, whoever's to blame, I'll downgrade my rating to a few stars. One final note - I never activated the PCLinq software which was supposed to allow file sharing between two connected laptops. I'm sure a savvy and patient user could figure this out, but I gave up pretty quickly. For me this is not a very important feature.
