The weight of the item being stowed makes the lock snap, which is good in that the lock is unlikely to slip and your gear fall onto the car or the ground. But the instructions require you to pull the lock straight down to unlock it, which is quite difficult when you have a wide box. You have to pull sideways and down somehow, and the rope ends up rubbing against the locking mechanism instead of moving freely. This, and over time, makes me wonder how that angular tension can affect the pulleys and lock. For $40 it's hard to expect more, but I'd happily pay $60 for a version with 4 pulleys installed instead of 2 like this.
