The tool worked as designed and was easier to use than I expected. Essentially, the center screw threads onto the machine and pulls the disc away from the magnets. You have to be careful when putting the drive back in place as the magnets are quite strong and if you're not careful the drive will snap itself back into place (with a lot of force). This is best controlled by turning the center screw in the opposite direction.
