I have been using an old dish rack for a long time and have never done anything to take care of it. I was given this to replace and of course being a plant based material it should be clear that it needs regular maintenance. It's more attractive, fits my double sink and holds a lot more than my dirty old previous shelf, but as other people have mentioned it's moldy after about 3 weeks of use. For me it's not black mold, but green mold, like on bread. So, here's the solution I want to make right away - wash it, let it dry completely, and then smear it with a good cutting board oil, preferably something with herbal or citrus extracts added for extra antifungal protection. In my case, I used Clark Bamboo Cutting Board Oil with Lavender and Rosemary Extracts and had no mold problems for over six weeks. I think it would be best to do this monthly so I should, but to see that I still don't have recurring mold is still very comforting. Generally if you want something maintenance free, get a metal or silicone finish. a shelf that can be thrown in the dishwasher from time to time. If you want something natural, sustainable, attractive, roomy and are willing to put a little time and effort into it, I think it's worth it. I gave it 4 stars because there are a few areas where some of the bamboo fibers have split or shed at the edges. Not bad, but it's a little annoying.
