The elastic at the bottom of the seam ripper itself and on the cap "carries" the thread so you can share it in a quilting class. Works perfectly. I also like the size and the feel in the hand - it's very easy to work with. Five stars are only missing because the cap cannot be placed on the seam ripper when open.
