I have several natural whetstones but I needed to sharpen the edge of my ceramic kitchen knives and that requires something much harder than regular stone. The Sharpal was a bit more expensive than I originally planned to spend, but after getting it I'm glad I spent the few extra bucks. Weighing almost 3 pounds, this is a piece of exercise equipment. This weight, as well as the rubberized base, keeps the stone really secure during use while still making it easy to carry. The grain difference is reasonable. With the rougher 325 grit finish I was able to easily set the edge onto the ceramic blades and had no trouble polishing that edge on the 1200 grit side. I had never used a diamond sharpening stone before so I tried a traditional one Sharpen. , Carbon steel blade. Very abrasive compared to my Ozark oil stones. This is a must for ceramics and very hard steels. At 3 inches wide, there's also plenty of room in the magazine to sharpen tools with a wider edge.
