Not a standard tape, not handy for practical measurements

I bought this tape to go with my Stanley 25' FatMax and I have to say I rarely use it (more on that later). It is primarily technical tape so it is not used much on our site but that aspect makes it quite confusing to read unless you have a specific use for technical tape. For those who don't. I don't know, but technical tape isn't delineated by feet: it's a continuous row of inches. For example, 5'-5" is not "5'-5" but 65". I previously thought this would be a useful feature when we are looking at some of the measurements in this project, the plans are in inches not foot-inch combinations and math is not my forte. Fast forward a few weeks and my first real test with this tape was a crushing failure. Firstly if you have low vision like I do it is very difficult to read the size on this tape. Inches are divided into tenths, not ordinary fractions (like eights). Firstly, it means there are a billion little lines here that you have to get close to the tape to read, making it difficult to read in low light or from a distance. Second, it's not a very accurate system, requiring a lot of guesswork, a VERY bad trait when you're trying to measure a precision design. If you want to read 3 feet - 2 3/8 inches, you have to assume that the distance between those .300 and .400 inches is too big. but .375. I don't use that tape anymore: it's gathering dust on my trailer desk and I just run to our consulting engineer who's here and specifically ask for it. I've never seen them either, but they ask and I deliver. If you're looking for something to measure at home or a more durable construction, stick with the standard Cooper tape or other brands like Stanley. This is not user friendly and is not recommended unless you clearly need such a tool.

Pros
  • Nice packaging
