Secure but uncomfortable weight distribution

I bought this to carry my scuba gear while doing field research in Australia. Given our small travel budget, we relied on public transport which meant my 50lb full of scuba gear (plus water and snacks) was carried from dive site to dive site in this bag for two weeks. There was a lot of walking as we dived several places ashore daily. The bag is in excellent condition and has not been damaged after extensive use. The problem was how the straps distributed the weight. I'm 5ft 6in, 140lbs, medium build, the bag sits very low, all the weight is on my neck even with the waist belt tightened for extra support. The shoulder straps should be slightly wider to increase comfort. I ended up bending over to relieve the pressure. Of course it was fully packed, tech BCD, regulator, full wetsuit, fins, thick soled boots, gloves, mask, flashlights and food so maybe it just wasn't designed for such heavy gear. It was definitely big and sturdy enough, the many holes and drains at the bottom were very comfortable. I liked having a sealed inner pocket to keep a dry shirt safe and an outer pocket for my camera and snacks. Overall a great bag but not the most comfortable for such long trips.
