It measured my 95% lab alcohol 100% accurately which was my first clue that something was wrong. 151 proofs were then measured (75.5%), Everclear at 79%. I needed to know the exact concentration of the mix - the hydrometer read 91.5% but based on two previous measurements of known mixes I decided that this was too high. So I checked the density with my lab equipment (calibrated cylinders and precision balances) and it was around 86%. Distilled water reads exactly 0% with a hydrometer, which is to be expected, but at higher concentrations of alcohol, this hydrometer reads about 5%.
