Review on Sony STR DH790 7 2 Ch Receiver Vision by Scoony Taker

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Excellent value for money and quality. Be sure to update the firmware

At first I was a bit surprised not to see the eARC function. After checking the Sony website, I discovered that my purchase (purchased on December 26, 2018) came with outdated firmware. Firmware update to VER. 1.171 for STR-DH790 took only 5 minutes via USB and gives you eARC functionality. If you have a PS4 and want to enable HDR (assuming your 4K TV supports it) in the settings, you will need this firmware to enable the feature. and improvementsAdded support for eARC functionNotes: eARC is a new standardized HDMI 2.1 function that adds support for the latest audio formats, in addition to the audio formats supported by the existing Audio Return Channel (ARC) feature. With the eARC function, you can enjoy object audio content such as Dolby Atmos - Dolby TrueHD and DTS:X or LPCM multi-channel content that cannot be transmitted with the ARC function. Someone in a previous review mentioned that CEC is not supported. That's absolutely right - you may need to turn it on on your TV for it to work (e.g. the TCL 6 series requires you to turn it on in your TV's settings). In any case, it sounds great and looks great. I upgraded to Revain Basics High Speed HDMI cable and everything runs fine in 4K. Make sure you have new HDMI cables as older ones may not support higher GBPS bandwidth. I love that it also supports Dolby Atmos. Excellent value for money and quality. Cons: User interface. well that sucks. I am sorry. But its use is so frustrating and ampMenu is just super weird to navigate and not very user friendly. The "Calibration" plug to calibrate the speakers was basically useless and kept throwing a random error on my surround back speakers even though they worked fine.

Pros
  • Easy to read control panel
Cons
  • Expensive
