Yes you can use this in a drop down scenario instead of the usual approach. Yes, it upgrades our lives and BR by eliminating the "big TV on the wall". Yes, making it easy to use in this way is tedious, and there is VERY LITTLE freedom to make changes during and after installation without the help of knowledgeable or helpful tips/advice/instructions from customer support. So be prepared to spend a lot of your smarts and energy building it yourself or having someone else "professionally install" it for you when you need a hidden ceiling TV. We chose this product for a number of reasons related to the use of space and walls, in addition to the 'Cool Factor' drop down TV that will have a place in our renovated/downsized home for this retired couple Manufacturer decided careful consideration. We're not at all disappointed with the product - it does exactly what it's supposed to do, quietly and efficiently, as you'd expect from a $400+ mechanism. Installation is not for the faint of heart or a beginner. Implications for your consideration when dealing with a ceiling mount (in no particular order of importance): 1) You must build/buy a custom inverted cabinet to hang the Whisper Lift. 2) This closet will need to be supported by a modified ceiling joist configuration [probably] due to beam spacing 3) Access (person AND equipment) is likely to be a major issue unless you have stairs to access a full loft 4) it unless you're exclusively using WIFI, cable and/or HDMI connectivity will be a big problem5 ) Integrating the bottom of the TV into an existing ceiling to "hide" it requires painstaking and delicate tuning to reveal it even close to reachable. If I knew it would be such a big effort, maybe my expectations would be more closely tied to my experience and it wouldn't feel as painful; I doubt I still wouldn't have done it myself. To put this in perspective, if my daughter wants me to do this at her house, I might suggest that she wait until she's 60 too to get a "disappearing" TV.
