Bag. You pour some paint. I bought the $151 360 DS instead of the $99 Homeright model because the 360 DS doesn't require paint dilution. The first time I used it I primed the gutters, went up and down the stairs and kept spraying. The unit had no problem with thick primer but I was disappointed with the overspray and that was with a 4 inch tip. I tested the unit on a faded white backyard fence and it did an amazing job, but when I was doing the gutters all the different angles got me wanting to fill the pump. I give it a four star rating for handling my fence. I don't think I will buy spray paint again in the future. If you buy this device to paint large areas and have the necessary change, you should definitely use the battery model. I had to keep refilling my spray gun
