Works straight away (after putting the batteries in, yes.)
It runs on 2 AA batteries so I assumed the remote has a boost converter (to reach 5v) or it with 3V powered Doesn't matter, works as is. I've had more than a few uses for it, and everyone I've shown it to has also figured out what to do with it.
