I used to have a crappy plastic carpet from another company where the carpet was very cheap and I also think the ball didn't always come back. It has good carpet, good wood construction and after I put the backplate on I don't think it has ever failed to return the ball no matter how hard I hit it. I think the edges of the mat can help the ball stay a bit centered which can be questionable in terms of accuracy but is great in terms of laziness as I don't have to follow the ball as it's always either lands in one comes back or slides down the hill towards me if I don't hit him hard enough.
