Review on SunPower® Flexible Monocrystalline Efficiency Solar by Jared Tovar

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Works better than I expected.

but not as bad as I was hoping. I am using it with a Buddipole charge controller to support/charge a 5Ah 4s2p LiFePO4 battery powering a 100W (radio) transceiver. I'm seeing 2.6 amps at 38 watts at 14 volts DC in my application - with my charge controller limiting charge to 14.5 volts DC the maximum I can expect from this 50 watt panel is 41W (that's about 82% of the rated power). Haven't had the good fortune to try a setup with the sun directly overhead - 2.6 amps at 4pm in clear Florida skies. Be sure to consider the expected battery voltage (you need 17.6VDC at 2.8A nominal to get 50W) at 2.8A nominal when calculating if you'll ever see 50W on this panel. The panel looks very well constructed; and I expect it to last for many years with normal care. I am very satisfied with the panel's ability to meet the needs of my application. Update 01/15/2020: no change - great panel - very satisfied. We ordered a second one to double the capacity. I love this product. Update 03/28/2021: Two panels in parallel gave me over 55 watts for my battery today (charge controller slows down the charge the closer the battery gets to full charge). Today was World Amateur Radio Competition Day and I made 30 SSB contacts a few hours before sunset and two panels completely drained my battery while I put the radio away. Since I'm transmitting at 100 watts peak power and the transmitter efficiency is only about 60%, the peak power needed for my battery/solar setup is probably over 166 watts or about 12 amps at voice peaks, and the solar setup saves a bit of battery. pretty well finished. I've just ordered a replacement charge controller that also has a USB output and I'm planning to use it to power the radio and either a) a second 15.6" display or b) a laptop. And a second display panel (and my cell phone - connected to a computer). Conclusion: Solar panels work well for my application.
