I bought this for GenCon because it was walking distance to our hotel but wanted to bring food for the day. I used 2 soft neoprene lunch bags inside to keep food cold all day but you can opt out. The outside pocket isn't thermally insulated, but it's perfect for my purse and essentials, as well as a few other small items. In fact, I used this backpack for a ton over the summer with my son. We take picnics on hikes or to the park, and even if we spend the day at the museum, it's nice that we can bring our own food and not depend on the restaurant. Overall, this is one of the best purchases I've made in a long time. I haven't tested how waterproof it is because I always use frozen water bottles or ice packs.
