So I have a wonderful furry little friend. He's an angel, he's adorable and fluffy, and he's a little demon cat that scratches the walls. I tried spraying the walls with repellent, I tried covering them with aluminum foil (it scratched through the foil). I tried splashing water on him (he loves water. He's playing with his bowl of water!). Everything I've tried has been a big failure. I've put all sorts of scratching posts next to the spots where he usually scratches and he doesn't like them. He does not like hanging, rope or poles. He ignores them all. Then it occurred to me that in addition to the structure of the wall, he might also prefer its thickness. Most scratching posts I've tried wobbled or wobbled because they were simply attached to a base or hung from a nail. I was very excited when I found this vertical wall mount and with a few careful steps to make it a comfortable experience, I'm proud that he actually uses this cat tree! This is the first and only scratching post he has ever used. If you're wondering why I didn't give that 5 stars, it's just because of the hooks they send to attach to the wall. I would advise you to discard these hooks and not use them. They are flimsy and when I tested it was pretty easy to pull the post out of them. Instead of hooks I used 4 very long deck screws and just screwed them right through the posts at the top and bottom corners. I drove the screws in deep enough that his claws probably wouldn't hit them if he scratched. The thing is hanging firmly on my wall in the spot where he used to like to scratch. I very carefully introduced him to her in a funny way, which I thought was helpful too. After making sure it was securely attached so it wouldn't have a bad experience if it fell on it, I took some catnip and placed it on the top edge and bottom curved part. This really got him interested and he rubbed it (so he put his scent on it, which they claim is part of the whole scratching process). At first he actually fell asleep and used the bottom of the post as a cure. pillow. I thought it would be a good start so I went and let him enjoy it. When he got up later, I went to the post, reached out my hand and started scratching him myself. This made him get up and put his paws on the post because he was trying to get me to pet him and to pet my hand he had to be standing on the post. He knew immediately he could sink his claws into him. , and immediately started scratching (breakthrough!). So as a reward, I gave him lots of love and support. He used it a few more times last night, and each time I tried to acknowledge his efforts when he was done. I won't pretend this is a complete solution in itself, because it isn't. I still have work to do on other spots on the walls that he likes to scratch. I'm guessing it will take a combination of replacing the ones he likes to use with these great pens and covering those areas for now so they don't feel good when you scratch them. Since he prefers to scratch the corners of the walls, I'll start with some of those clear plastic corner protectors. If need be, I'll even consider putting up clear plexiglass in areas he's visited many times. I think the hard plastic will definitely keep it from getting scratched in those spots and now that it has a post it likes I'm hoping it will be an easy switch!
