Girl Scout Handprints - Can cast 9 x 32 ounce deli containers

I used this to make handprints for the Girl Scout Troop 3rd Grade ( 8-9 years old). We did 8 handprints in 32 ounce plastic deli containers (Thanks from Fred Meyer, thanks!) and I have 1 print left. The containers were only 2 inches full before hands entered them. We used Paris Dap 10310 Plaster of Paris Tub Molding Material 8lb White DAP to fill them in and an 8lb can was enough with extra residue. The girls themselves mixed and stirred with minimal assistance. Tips: Moms wanted to stir this like a batter, but there was too much air in it. Stir in circles, less up and down, so less air is trapped as it thickens. Before putting your hand in, press firmly to make the bubbles rise to the top. If you want a smooth base for your hand, smooth the top of the alginate before it dries. Fill the mold with half the required amount of plaster, roll out well and tap to remove bubbles, then fill to the top mark. Mix 1:1 by volume. Alginate powder is completely soluble in water like salt or sugar. This means when trying to figure out how much you need, think of an amount of water that is very close to your final mix volume.

Pros
  • Plaster of Paris, Matrix NEO (polymer modified plaster) or smooth cast 300Q Ultra Fast Urethane Resin in a reproduction mold
Cons
  • Piggy Bank Prize
