I hate traditional kitty litter. It stinks, it's heavy, it crumbles when you pick it up and ejects particles. I have to empty drawers every 3 days. The traditional filler is just terrible. Crystal filler Fresh Steps is just great. It's trackable, but as you can see from my photos, it's not as bad and noticeable as clay debris. I keep a broom nearby so I can quickly sweep up the crystals while I shovel up the crate. What to scoop is MUCH EASIER. The crystals are very light and the dustpan is easy to move over. They're also quite fun to look through, but that might just be me as I love the sensory experience of it. That's fine because, like I said, it's easy to scoop, lighter, just a lot smoother. Also, the smell is gone. They soak up the urine smell so much that I have to stand right on top of the box to smell anything. No persistent poop odor. You must sift the crystals daily. This is absolutely necessary in everyday life. Don't leave them on for days or weeks as you want them to soak in better. Once most of them turn green, change them completely. It usually takes me about 5 minutes to scoop and sift both boxes. It used to take me 5 minutes to pick up a box as I had to keep checking for lumps or feces mixing with the filler, scraping it off the walls, etc. Can't say anything bad about it. My cats took to it immediately. Including my girl who doesn't like the tray she uses all the time. I think she hated the mud bed too. Maybe the only downside is that it's very noisy when they go inside. My cats are a bit chubby and their weight moves them around making a neat noise as they go in and out or dig in. It doesn't bother me at all, but some people might find it annoying. Overall, this is the best pen I've ever had.
