First, this is not required to run a game on the 3DS, but the added buttons improve some games. The 3DS sliding wall extension is the Japanese version of the Pro circular wall. However, it still works on American systems. This expansion model is only for original 3DS models and includes an additional round pad, two new shoulder buttons/triggers and an additional shoulder button R. This expansion only works in a few games. The Monster Hunter series, Kingdom Hearts, Kid Icarus and Metal Gear are just a few of the supported games. Smash Bros is not supported. It's also worth noting that the lengthening makes the system more comfortable to hold. Mario Kart 7 requires you to hold A, which is awkward on the original 3DS, but the game is much easier to play with the expansion, despite not using any buttons. The extension is powered by one AAA battery. A battery lasts a long time, but it would still be wise to have extra spares in case they run out. It's also worth noting that the manual is entirely in Japanese, but that doesn't matter as the device is fairly easy to understand.
