This worked exactly for what I needed. I wanted to tip my hat off my case and fan and also have loose GPIO pins over my hat. I made some changes and got it working. I took one of those stackable connectors and cut all the pins in half (maybe even a little more than half). I won't lie, it was damn hard but I did it and it worked. Then I put one of those stackable elements on top of where I cut the pins. I then stacked this entire stack directly onto the Pi board's gpio. Then I put the hat on the top stackable last and soldered all the connections. Now my hat is over the body leaving room for the fan. I also have pins that go through the hat and stick out just enough to be used for other things. For example, as you can see in the attached photos, I power the case fan through a 5V pin and a ground pin. Ideal!
