I've been a dance teacher/studio owner since 1993. I've been wearing them for years and I love them! They fit perfectly, just how I want them. I like my dance shoes to be snug from the start because when they are of good quality they conform to my foot which is EXACTLY what I want. I can go through a few sessions with some discomfort until they dip, but on these it's very minor. The top fits my foot like a glove after only a few sessions. Every part of the shoe that comes into contact with your skin is lined in one way or another. Neoprene prevents them from constantly stretching and getting too long. The last thing I need in dance shoes is extra room: slipping here can cause blisters, and the extra toe material can get in the way and knock me off my feet (trust me, I don't need help to trip!). Darts emphasize the arch so beautifully! Even my dancers who are not that strong have nice legs in them. To answer some of the questions I've been asked: what size should I buy? Do you like your dance shoes tight or loose and what do you wear them for? I like a tight fit, so I wear size 8.5 trainers and buy these in size 8.5. Normally I'm a size 9 for shoes, heels or boots, but these flashy shoes will mold to my foot shape over time, so a size 8.5 is perfect and allows for some degree of wide feet (in the metatarsal area). This size allows my toes to rest on the end of the shoe, which is what I personally like. If you like having lots of space and (or your child) maybe doing 2 recreational activities a week, then you can probably stick with your normal outdoor shoe size. If you (or your child) compete and take a few hours of classes a week, it's best to talk to the teacher about what you prefer. how long do they last Again, it depends on what you need them for. My senior competition team (approx. 10-12 competitions per year) can go through several couples per dance season. This is normal for ANY dance shoe that can withstand heavy use. However, my recreational classes can last a full year without having to buy a second pair if they just don't outgrow them. They have a firmer cushion at the ball of the foot than other jazz shoes and I have found that most other shoes fail first. They usually have their thumb through the top, but until then we're getting more than enough wear and tear from them. Do you have a lot of support? No, but dance shoes are not designed for that. Dancers need strong legs and too much support can prevent them from developing that strength. Think of jazz shoes as a good second protective skin. These are not street shoes and are designed to be worn on the dance floor only. As such, they are not readily comparable to street shoes in that sense. There is no one size fits all style and brand of dance shoes. You just have to find what suits your foot and the way you dance. But I find they fit a lot of our students and are DEFINITELY my favorite jazz shoe!
