My father started teaching my son how to carve last year for his birthday, and got him a little carving knife and some template shapes. My son had just turned 9. He completely fell in love with this craft, and has been eager to carve and whittle every fat stick or scrap block of wood he can find. Seeing it wasn't just a passing fancy, I decided to get this set as the next level of training for his craft. My dad saw it and said it was a very nice beginner set, particularly for the price, so we're going to be giving it to him for Christmas this year. Around November there is a wood carving event not too far from us as well, that has workshops for different skill levels, and people showing off and selling their work. I think it will just keep that fire lit for his interest and it helps him learn how to focus and love what he produces from all his hard work.
