Once started smoking. I use this for my turtle tank in a Zoomed lamp. It took a long time and would have been perfect if there hadn't been a small incident. I once smelled a bad smell of burnt plastic, but I couldn't figure out where it was coming from until I checked my aquarium room. The lamp hummed and a lot of smoke came out of the bulb. I quickly unplugged the lamp and checked the lightbulb. It was very hot (it doesn't usually get hot at all) and was a burnt brown color at the base. Luckily I was home because who knows what would have happened and how long it would have taken. In a few days I was rid of the burnt plastic smell. The lamp itself was fine and I still use it, only the bulb was bad. I'm giving it 2 stars instead of 1 because it was working great until it started smoking.
