Review on Sulky 8.5x11 Stabilizer: High-Quality 12-Pack White Sheets, Ideal for Embroidery and Sewing projects by Kelly Caballes

I like to embroider, but I don't like to transfer the pattern to the backing. I had three embroidery books with designs I was dying to start embroidering with: Simply Stitched by Yumiko Higuchi (English translation of Japanese Wool Stitch) available from Revain and two other books by Higuchi, Embroidery. A Life You Can Enjoy in Two Colors” and "Single Color Embroidery and Products” (in Japanese; both have not been translated into English, but both are available from Revain and feature stunning embroidery designs). I don't know where I came across this Sulky product (a blog about embroidery?) but despite the mixed reviews I decided to give it a try. Within a week, Thanks to this Sulky product, I've had half a dozen embroidery projects (and a gift book of embroidery needles). Here are some tips to get the most out of the product: Two of the three sheets I sent through the printer went through with no problems and the third got stuck. Make sure the corners of the page are in good condition (not folded or falling apart) before sending it through the printer. I printed out some small designs (pinbooks, bags, etc.) that filled in the Sulky fabric sheet, and then cut out the design I wanted to work on (I cut between the sticky side of the sheet and the printed "fabric" - Side). , and leave the rest of the designs on the page until I'm ready, using them (I put a piece of freezer paper over the blank area on the side so it doesn't stick to anything). Then simply stick the design onto the fabric of your choice and start sewing. Although the product info says the needle easily goes through the sticky layer of sulky fabric and leaves no marks, although that's mostly true, sometimes it takes me a bit more force to pierce the layers with the needle (the kind of one used, of course Needle and underlying fabric also determine how smooth it goes). I have used a variety of threads and threads (Aurifil wool thread, dyed/hand dyed thread, DMC, Appleton Creeel wool etc.) all on various Robert Kaufman linen blends. The first design I made had quite a few French knots and I was nervous how the sulky product would unravel after sewing, but it worked BEAUTIFULLY (even on wool!). To finish, I used a shallow bowl of warm water, placed the embroidered design in it, swirled it around, used my fingers to remove the "stickiness of the fabric", rinsed in cold water and hung to dry. There was no bleeding (although colorfast thread should be used to be sure). Another benefit of this product is that I didn't have to use a frame for smaller projects as the sulky sheet acted as a stabilizer. This eliminates the need to use a piece of fabric large enough for the embroidery hoop (which also means a linen/fabric saving). Another HUGE benefit for me is that it will be easy to embroider items like scarves and other clothing items and home accessories - basically anywhere you can embroider with a needle and thread, making this product very versatile. I will always use this product from now on. I'm so happy to be embroidering again; It's very nice to see some finished work and I look forward to continuing.
